What is damascus steel?

Nowadays, you see a lot of knives with a blade made from damascus steel. But what is damascus steel exactly? Damascus steel is comprised of many layers of steel that are forged on top of each other. This type of steel is also known as damast steel or simply as folded steel. Producing damascus steel is a true art form. No two blades have the same pattern, so each damascus knife is unique! They make cooking fun. Want to learn more? Check out our info-topic: What is damascus steel?

Why are damascus steel knives expensive?

Good question! However, we prefer calling these knives valuable. The reason behind this is that the price of a damascus knife is easy to justify when you take into account the amount of work that goes into making one. When taking a closer look at the production of damascus steel, you'll see that it still requires a large amount of manual work to forge it. Even 'industrially' manufactured damascus requires an extraordinary amount of time and manpower.

In addition, a blade made of damascus steel requires a few extra steps in terms of finishing. This allows them to shape, sand and polish a damascus knife to perfection. Shiny! However, doing this will hide the stunning damascus pattern. That's why the blade still needs to be etched. Multiple times, preferable, and with different chemicals. Afterwards, the knife might need to be polished again. And etched again. Every manufacturer has their own formulas for this. Keeping all these steps in mind, it's understandable that a knife with a damascus blade is a valuable product.
