Can’t see the forest for the trees?


Survival expert Les Stroud has created a versatile axe in cooperation with Wetterlings. It is light enough to bring along on survival tours. Chopping down a (small) tree is just as easy as making the starting logs for a campfire. The back of the axe can be used as a hammer.  
   


The stem is made of American hickory. This type of wood is highly resistant to the great force that is exercised during chopping.  
   


Wetterlings axes come with a leather protective case for the axe head.

The blade has a nice convex taper and a very sharp (not razor sharp, but that's ok) edge, The working part of the blade is polished, as is the face of the hammer (which is good, if you want to use the hammer for something other than nails). The handle is hickory and quite light, which I personally don't like (I like European ash wood), this gives the axe a more head-heavy balance, which you usually don't get with axes this small. So even though it's a small axe, using it one handed is quite difficult. The shafting of the blade is done quite well, with a glued wooden wedge (in stead of an iron one) and the shaft is treated with linseed oil. That's always a nice touch. There's a hole for a lanyard at the bottom, but I must admit that I've never used a layard hole on a cleaving axe (which this axe actually feels like) before. A layard might come in handy when one decides to use this axe one-handed. The leather sheath looks quite durable and is riveted, not sewn (which helps with durability) and has a leather strip on the inside to protect the blade edge from the rivets. The sheath closes with a snap fastener, which is ok.  I have not yet tested this axe to look at the edge retention and balance, but overall, this looks like a quality product.

Die Axt im Allgemeinen ist in einem sehr guten Zustand. Leichter Flugrost war am Hammerkopf zu finden. Ab Werk schon recht scharf. Wenn man Perfektionist ist, kann man noch ein wenig nachhelfen. 
Ich habe 2 Äxte gekauft. Beide nur im Einstielungswinkel unterschiedlich. Sonst gleichhohe Qualität. Die eine trifft im gleichen Schwung mit der Blattmitte, die andere im oberen Viertel. 
Die Axt liegt gut in einer und in beiden Händen. Der Hickorystiel ist leicht rau. Manche mögen das, ich hab noch ein bischen geschmirgelt. 
Der Balancepunkt liegt ungefähr 6,5cm unterhalb des Axtkopfes. Insgesamt nicht zu schwer, nicht zu leicht. Kann man auch auf größeren Trecks mitschleppen. 
Die Lederscheide ist super. Unkompliziert einhändig abzumachen und anzulegen. Nur das Loch am Stielende hab ich mir größer gebort, damit ich die Lederscheide dort leicht einfädeln kann (Verlustangst, Gebaumel stört mich nicht).
Schön, praktisch, einwandfrei. 

Het is een vrij prijzige bijl, want van het zelfde merk kan je voor minder geld ook een bijl aanschaffen. Hij is echter lekker licht en werkt erg goed! Ik en een aantal vrienden hebben er mee gewerkt (kloven, stammen doorhakken en wat andere werkzaamheden) en hij presteert simpelweg super goed!

Ik ben zeer blij met mijn aanschaf.
Voldeed aan verwachting en is het zeker waard.
Voor iedereen die een goed stuk gereedschap zoekt is deze 
aan te raden.
