Everything about the Japanese Higo no Kami pocket knife emanates tradition. In the past everyone in Japan, including school children, used to carry a knife like this. The Higo pocket knife was used to sharpen pencils and for many other tasks. 


The blade is easy to open with the 'chikiri' (the lever at the end of the blade). As is common for this type of knife, it doesn't have a lock and the blade completely disappears inside the handle when closed. 


## Aogami (blue paper steel)


Blue paper steel is a modern high-performance steel. It is made by removing impurities from SK steel and adding extra tungsten and chromium. This improves the sharpness retention. However, this steel is not corrosion-resistant.


## IZUSHIBUKI: water droplet finish


The name of this finish is *izushibuki* in Japanese. Loosely translated, this means "splashes", which perfectly describes the finish that makes it look like there are water droplets on the handle. The light reflection on the handle is truly spectacular and utterly unique. The handles are lightly textured between the drops. The droplets themselves are flat. The finish is available in rosé, black and blue.

Heute angekommen, macht einen echt soliden Eindruck. Kurios finde ich die Lackierung des Messers die anmutet wie eine schlechte Lackierung ob der vielen Blasen auf dem Griff, welche aber zugegebenermaßen den Griff deutlich griffiger macht.
Vermutlich wird mit der Zeit die Lackierung sich abgreifen.
Der Klappmechanismus erinnert direkt an Rasiermesser. Die Klinge ist schon recht scharf ab Werk, könnte bei Nachschärfen glatt als Rasiermesser genutzt werden. 


Als Fan historischer, recht simpler Taschenmesser macht es sich gut zwischen meinem seid Jahren gebrauchten Opinel Carbone No. 10, und meinem ebenfalls heute angekommenen Douk-Douk Messer. 

Diese Messer werden heute noch produziert, das ist der große Vorteil dieser günstigen Messer.

Im höherpreisigen Segment habe ich noch ein Böker 3000 Lightweight, das mir allerdings zu schade ist zum gebrauchen, denn es wird nicht mehr produziert. Eher als Gentleman's knive ist es zu nutzen, als die anderen 3 historischen Taschenmesser.  Letztere sind voll und ganz als EDC's sogar mit Ausnahme des Opinels, wegen dessen Virobloc-Mechanismus, im europäischen Ausland weitestgehend legal einzusetzen.

A practical functional no nonsense knife which is slim light and easy to carry in your pocket. Its also very very sharp.

Excellent item - razor sharp is somehow an understatement to describe this knife. A traditional Japanese design of simple construction and high quality materials. The blue paper steel blade is awesome - a top product!
