The history of Douk-Douk dates back to 1929 in France, where the first Douk-Douk's were produced. Originally these knives were produced there to be exported to the French colonies in Africa and Oceania. The knives grew in popularity thanks to the relatively low price and the razor-sharp edge. 

The blade is made from XC75 carbon steel, which can become really sharp. Like with all carbon steel, however, it is key to maintain the blade to prevent rust. The blade is not secured by a real lock, but the solid spring does make sure the blade does not accidentally close.

Klassieker die  niet mag ontbreken in je collectie.

Das große Douk-Douk ist ein denkbar einfaches, aber kultiges Messer. Der Stahlrahmen könnte einfacher nicht sein, dagegen ist ein Mercator beinahe schon "sophisticated". Die urige und typische Klingenform ist im Prinzip einfach eine Clippoint-Klinge, die zusätzliche Ausbuchtung hat keine Funktion. Braucht sie aber auch nicht. Die Klinge ist robust, aber dünn genug um richtig scharf ausgeschliffen werden zu können, was das Douk-Douk zu einem passablen Alltagsmesser, vor allem aber zu einem guten Helfer in der Küche und beim Grillen macht, auch wenn es nicht gerade wie das typische Kochmesser ausschaut. Mit der (schwergängigen) Öse lässt sich die Klinge blockieren, die aber auch durch eine starke Feder in Position gehalten wird. Überrascht war ich vom Halfstop, der bei einer solchen Klinge wirklich nützlich ist und versehentliche Verletzungen verhindern hilft. Anders als das Mercator hat dieses Messer kein Backlock, aber wie schon gesagt, das Slipjoint mit starker Feder arretiert die Klinge auch im offenen Zustand völlig ausreichend für normale Arbeiten. Ich bin mit dem Messer zufrieden. 
Leider scheint es keine passendes Etui dafür vom Hersteller zu geben, man kann sich aber mit dem schönen Otter Steck-Etui für das (große) Mercator behelfen, in das dieses Messer ebenfalls perfekt passt. 
Die Prägung auf dem Stahlrahmen ist schön und macht einen guten Teil des Charmes dieses Messers aus – noch schöner wäre es, wenn sie mit weißem Lack gefüllt wäre, damit man sie auch sieht. Vielleicht werde ich das selbst noch nachholen. Die Laser"Gravur" auf der Klinge kommt natürlich nicht an eine Ätzung heran, schaut aber tatsächlich besser aus als die meisten 0815-Lasergravuren. 
Alles in allem ein Messer, das für die meisten vielleicht nicht das EDC der Wahl sein dürfte, das man aber gern in der Sammlung hat und das sich durchaus als nützlich und vielseitig erweist, wenn man es dabei hat. Die Verarbeitung ist tadellos. Ich bin zufrieden. Ein vernünftiges Messer zu einem bezahlbaren Preis. 

Een verzamelaar zonder Douk-Douk is zonder deze Franse (Thiers) klassieker (Algerijnse Oorlog) geen verzamelaar. Daarnaast is een Douk-Douk zeer praktisch omdat ie héél dun is. En uiteraard zeer scherp te slijpen. En niet duur. Must-have.
