The **Bark River Gunny** is a compact version of the Bravo 1. Originally this knife was designed for (para)military use. Soon, however, it became evident that this knife was capable of a whole lot more. Today the Gunny is a popular knife amongst bushcraft enthusiasts and hunters. It is solidly constructed with enough blade thickness for the more demanding tasks. At the same time it is light enough for hikes. A perfect knife that can be used for many purposes.



The spine of the blade is enhanced with a so-called *ramp*. This is a small protrusion with serrations on one side. Intuitively the ramp might be located a little too far back to naturally place your thumb. However, you are meant to place your thumb just in front of the ramp. As such it is easier to apply force during the more detailed tasks. The serrated edge of the ramp is shaped as such to make producing sparks with a firesteel a piece of cake.



The blade is made from A2 tool steel. A strong type of steel that would rather bend than break. You do, however, need to be careful with moisture and acids: A2 is not completely stainless. So clean it after use and occasionally add a drop of oil to keep this knife in great shape. The edge has been enhanced with a convex grind which you can maintain by [stropping it](/en/ct/stropping.htm).



The handle is made from micarta. A strong and light-weight material, made from linen and synthetic resin. Feels comfortable in hand, even in wet or cold circumstances.



The Bark River Gunny comes with a leather belt sheath. You can carry it both straight (belt width up to 5.5 cm) and diagonally (belt width up to 6.0 cm). The sheath also has a loop for a firesteel (max. diameter ~7.0 mm).



Bark River makes all of its knives almost completely by hand. As such each knife is unique. Especially when working with natural materials a knife can differ from the photographs. The knife you receive can therefore be subtly different from the product photos. The model and type of material, however, will always be the same. Because each Bark River knife is produced by hand in select production runs the delivery times can vary greatly. Ik ben heel blij met dit mes. Het is een klassieker waarmee je heel veel kunt doen. Van een appeltje schillen tot batonneren! Hoewel het de aller goedkoopste Bark River is, is de kwaliteit prima; dus geen budgetlijn maar topkwaliteit.
Het enige waar ik even aan moest wennen is de gevoeligheid voor vlekken en aanslag (nog geen roest). Vaak oliën helpt. Net als accepteren dat het mes snel patina heeft.
