Opinel breaks 70 years of tradition with the Néo6 and innovative Opiflex mechanism

Opinel has held on to its iconic Virobloc locking system since 1955. But now, nearly 70 years later, the French brand is breaking with this tradition and introducing the Néo6. This compact EDC knife features the innovative Opiflex mechanism, a slipjoint-like system that keeps the blade securely in place without locking. A bold move that prepares Opinel for the future without losing sight of its heritage.

A revolution since 1955: the Néo6 with Opiflex opens the future

Designed for everyday use, the Opinel Néo6 combines a lightweight design with ease of use. The 7 cm stainless steel blade has a rounded tip, making it safer and more compliant with stricter knife laws in many countries. The biggest difference from previous Opinel models is the Opiflex mechanism, a smart, spring-loaded design that keeps the blade stable in both open and closed positions.

Opiflex vs. Virobloc: why this mechanism is the future

The Virobloc system, invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, was a revolution of its time. The rotating metal ring allowed the blade to be securely locked in both open and closed positions. Since 2000, it has been the standard for all Opinel pocket knives.

Now, Opinel introduces the Opiflex system, an innovative approach that does not lock the blade but still prevents it from closing unintentionally. This system works with a spring-loaded tongue that holds the blade firmly in place—just like a slipjoint knife.

This offers advantages. Without a locking mechanism, the Néo6 complies with knife regulations in many countries, making it more accessible. The spring mechanism ensures that the blade does not close unexpectedly, while the rounded tip enhances safety. This makes the Néo6 a reliable and practical knife for everyday use.

Why size No. 6?

Opinel deliberately chose size 6 for the Néo6, striking the perfect balance between portability and functionality. At 9.5 cm closed and weighing only 25 grams, it fits effortlessly into your pocket or bag. The 7 cm blade is ideal for daily tasks such as opening packages, cutting fruit, or handling small jobs. Compact enough to carry everywhere, large enough to be practical.
